Farm Safety Week: Slow Down, Stay Safe

This week is Farm Safety Week-a good time to pause and think about the risks that come with farm life. Farming is rewarding, but it’s also one of the most dangerous jobs out there. Every day, farmers work with heavy equipment, unpredictable livestock, chemicals, and long hours that can push the limits of focus and energy.

During the busy season, especially harvest, it’s easy to feel pressure to rush. But the truth is, most farm accidents happen when tasks are hurried. Taking a few extra minutes to shut off machinery before clearing a jam, double-checking PTO shields, or simply stopping to rest can be the difference between heading home safe or ending the day in the ER.

A Reminder for Farmers

  • Slow down when you’re tired-fatigue makes small mistakes bigger.

  • Don’t skip safety checks. Even if you’ve done a task a thousand times, treat it like it’s the first.

  • Use the buddy system when possible. Having someone nearby can save precious time in an emergency.

A Message for the Public

Harvest season also means more tractors, combines, and farm trucks on the road. These machines aren’t built for speed, and they take up more space than a regular vehicle. We’re asking drivers to be patient when sharing the road:

  • If you’re behind a tractor on a back road, give it space.

  • Don’t try to pass on a blind curve or hill.

  • Remember: the farmer ahead of you is just trying to get the crop in safely, not hold you up.

A few minutes of patience can prevent a tragedy.

Wrapping Up

Farm Safety Week is a reminder to look out for ourselves and each other-whether you’re working long hours in the field or driving down a country road. Let’s slow down, stay alert, and make sure everyone gets home safe.
