Preparing for Change: New Penny Rounding Policy Begins April 1, 2026
At Rockingham Cooperative, we’re always working to keep your checkout experience simple, efficient, and convenient. Beginning April 1, 2026, we will be implementing a new Penny Rounding Policy at all Rockingham Cooperative locations.
Why This Change?
The United States Mint officially discontinued production of the penny on November 12, 2025. As pennies are phased out of circulation, businesses across the country are adapting to reduce reliance on them in everyday cash transactions.
How the Rounding Policy Works
This policy only applies to cash transactions and is designed to make paying with cash easier—without the need for pennies.
Here’s what to expect:
If paying with cash:
Your total will be rounded to the nearest $0.05
Totals ending in 1¢ or 2¢ will round down
Totals ending in 3¢ or 4¢ will round up
Totals ending in 6¢ or 7¢ will round down
Totals ending in 8¢ or 9¢ will round up
Exact change? No problem.
We will still accept pennies if you choose to pay with exact change
Paying with card or digital payment?
No changes at all—your total will remain exact when using:
Debit cards
Credit cards
Gift cards
What This Means for You
This change is designed to:
Speed up checkout times
Simplify cash handling
Reflect the evolving U.S. currency system
Most importantly, the rounding balances out over time—sometimes in your favor, sometimes not—but always within just a few cents.
Our Commitment to You
We understand that any change can raise questions, and we’re here to help. Our team members are happy to walk you through the process and ensure your experience remains smooth and transparent.
Thank you for your continued support and for being part of the Rockingham Cooperative community.
